Yes there are several things that grow in stagnant water that cause illness. Some algae is toxic as well as larvae. Water needs to be changed regularly or use a pet flow watering system.

You should be giving your dog or dogs fresh water every day. YES, it’s a health risk! If it’s growing algae that means it’s stagnant and can be hosting other things like parasite larvae. The dog(s) should have clean water out of the tap, just like you.

If your dogs water is “green” that means it is full of algae and toxins, not very health period.
Your dogs water should be changed daily sometimes twice a day depending the the temperature of the area you live ~ the hotter the climate, the faster algae will grow.
July 15th, 2009 at 4:43 am
You should provide clean drinking water to a dog daily that’s what a responsible pet owner does.

I soooooo love it when negligent pet owners post questions like this, which basically amount to, “Is it OK for me to not take good care of my dog?” Usually they are angry later and say that people were rude or judgmental in their answers. People have been rude to you, and some have been a little judgmental, too. Guess what. You deserve it. It is negligent, lazy and careless not to change the dog’s water every day. Not mention dangerous and unhealthy for the dog. If you can’t spend a few seconds doing this simple thing for your pet, then pack him up and give him to someone who will take proper care of him.
